What a great video! I’m a beginner and I learned a lot. I’m a guitar player and I could easily replace the power tools name and function for guitar models and accessories. (Like sandpaper/guitar strings) It can be overwhelming for the beginner to know what to get starting out. Thanks!

Appreciate the video's regarding finishes. I am preparing two walnut slabs for picnic table bench tops. Yes, many have stated walnut is not a great wood for outdoors, but "happy wife..." Therefore, I would appreciate your recommendations for how to treat the wood. Initially, I was considering an oil based finish with a paste wax top coat. My rational behind this approach, knowing it will require annual maintenance, oil/wax is easier to re-apply.

Was interested in purchasing the plans for this as my shop has similar layout. Could you share the outer dimensions of the station once assembled? Basic length, width/depth and height. Also interested in plans for the outfeed behind the sawstop. Interested in outfeed that does double duty as workbench and outfeed.

I mean young john did a fantastic work. Old john didnt really do much, the tools he has are enough to do way better. The problem is that he used pallets, if he had used a more noble wood, the finisshing would have looked really good. For now it looks amateurish, I also hate the countour of the table plateau, he could have done something way more elegant with exactly the same pieces

I agree that this video is a great contribution, not only in content, details and techniques, but in simplicity. My congratulations for sharing this great tutorial. Side note: the method for making the groove where the door panel (or the cover for the drawer) will go is simply fantastic, both for its practicality and speed of execution.

The legal side for the original manufacturers is even worse than you might think: They can’t choose to just let a knockoff slide without losing their rights to their trademark or trade dress. Both of these exclusivity rights require active defense or they can be declared invalid. Design patents are a bit more forgiving in this regard, but failure to defend can weaken the patent’s perceived value and make it harder to enforce against future infringement, particularly with regard to collecting damages. So it’s a real problem, if you don’t play an expensive game of legal whack-a-mole, you could lose the rights to your trademark and trade dress, and weaken the value of your patents. (Not a lawyer, but I’ve served as an expert witness in patent infringement cases.)

If you're suggesting "karate chopping", tell folks to chop WITH the grain, or they'll break their hands chopping ACROSS the grain. In demonstrations, if you get the chance to see the boards up close, you'll see that they are held with the grain in the direction of the anticipated "chop" or "kick".

As an old cabinet maker pros and cons for both. Your joinery was much better than Johns, it looked a lot neater. On functionality, Johns table would be much more stable and could hold more weight, as well as being a generous size. Fun to watch, it looked like you both had fun.

I love that you took a jab at brand loyalists... there's even some in the comments. People just really love to feel like they made the right decision, so they will die on whatever hill they chose. Whether it's Makita over Dewalt or Playstation over Xbox or whatever it happens to be. There's an element of being so obsessed with the choice that you made that you get like a superiority complex whenever someone didn't choose the same thing you did and you think they are ignorant or made the wrong choice.

For the tool one it's definitely not 100% fiction. I do agree that for the average person, the difference between ryobi and dewalt, Milwaukee, or makita won't be noticed. But there is most certainly a difference. From my experience though you really can't go wrong with Milwaukee, DeWalt, rigid, and Makita. Ryobi is fine if you're a home reno kinda guy not using the stuff every day

Thank you, John! I appreciate your insight, tho I bought a Stanley Sharptooth hand saw ($25?) & a Vaughan Bear pull Saw ($25?) at a local 'hardware & building supply'. They are both good tools tho the Stanley is more carpenter than furniture oriented. But here's one to AVOID! I bought "GREBSTK 4 Piece Wood Chisel Set" (w/ "Beech Handle" for $16. Not quite a total waste of money but close. I'll be able to use them some if the wood isn't too hard but they don't hold up. I can sharpen them (they sharpen easily) but they just barely cut hard wood. My cheapo Harbor Freight chisels cut better & hold an edge longer but they are not as 'easy' to use. Have a GREAT day, Neighbor! PS We are neighbors, I live in Georgia.

Gluing the drawer bottoms on as you did may work alright for light duty use. If however you anticipate storing heavier items in the drawer, it would be better to set the drawer bottom into a groove cut into the sides. Allowing enough room between the drawer side bottoms to the groove, will also allow running a brace bd. under the drawer bottom, for even more heavier duty use.
